Hosts Morocco held their nerve to defeat Ghana’s Black Queens 4-2 on penalties in a tense WAFCON 2024 semi-final on Tuesday night, booking a return to the final where they will face the Super Falcons of Nigeria in what promises to be a blockbuster continental showdown.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time, with both teams trading goals in regulation. Ghana struck first through Stella Nyamekye in the 26th minute, but Sakina Ouzraoui drew Morocco level ten minutes into the second half.
Neither side could find a winner, and the game headed into penalties, where Morocco showed ruthless precision.
Morocco Ice-Cold, Ghana Falters
The Moroccans converted all four of their spot-kicks, while Ghana saw two crucial efforts saved, ending their dream of a first final since 1998.
“We’ve shown resilience. Now it’s about the final,” said Morocco coach Reynald Pedros post-match. “But we know what’s coming — Nigeria.”
This marks Morocco’s second consecutive WAFCON final, having finished runners-up to South Africa in 2022.

The final now sets the stage for an emotionally charged Nigeria vs Morocco rematch. At the 2022 edition, Morocco eliminated the Falcons in the semi-final on penalties, after Nigeria played most of the second half and extra-time with nine players following red cards to Rasheedat Ajibade and Halimatu Ayinde.
Now, the Falcons return with vengeance in their eyes and form on their side.
Rasheedat Ajibade and Michelle Alozie were on the scoresheet in Nigeria’s 2-1 victory over defending champions South Africa earlier on Tuesday, showing they’re peaking at the right time.
“This team is fearless,” said Nigeria coach Randy Waldrum. “We’re not here to settle for silver.”
Saturday Night Showdown in Rabat
The WAFCON 2024 final will be held Saturday night in Rabat, with the Super Falcons aiming for a record-extending 10th title, while Morocco look to lift the trophy on home soil for the very first time.
Nigeria are unbeaten. Morocco are hungry. The continent is watching.
