A shift from sticker to screen
The UK digital eVisa for Nigerians will officially replace traditional vignette visa stickers beginning February 25, 2026, as the United Kingdom transitions toward a fully digital immigration system.
Under the new system, approved applicants will access their visa status electronically through a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account rather than via a physical sticker placed inside their passports.
What changes — and what does not
According to the British High Commission in Abuja, the application process remains unchanged. Nigerian applicants will still apply online, attend a Visa Application Centre to provide biometric information, and meet all eligibility requirements.
The only difference is format: successful applicants will receive an electronic visa linked to their UKVI account.
Travellers holding valid vignette stickers do not need to take any action until expiration or replacement becomes necessary.
Why the UK is moving digital
The UK government describes the transition as part of a broader plan to modernise border management and reduce reliance on physical documentation.
Officials say digital visas offer faster passport returns, easier online access to immigration status, and enhanced security against loss, theft or tampering.
The system also allows immigration records to be updated centrally without reissuing physical documents.
Nigeria among early adopters
Nigeria joins other countries in the UK’s phased rollout of digital visa processing.
The British Deputy High Commissioner in Abuja said the reform aims to simplify travel for Nigerian visitors, students and workers while maintaining security standards.
Given the strong travel, education and business ties between Nigeria and the UK, the shift affects a significant volume of applicants annually.

Applicants will need to create and manage a UKVI account to access proof of status, which may be requested by airlines or border officials.
