Tinubu Sends Condolences
ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has condoled with passengers of the Abuja–Kaduna train that derailed on Tuesday, promising that his government will take all necessary measures to prevent a recurrence.
“Even while in Brazil, I have received reports of today’s derailment. I am deeply saddened by this incident. My heartfelt prayers are with the injured, their families, and all passengers who went through this distressing experience,” Tinubu said in a post on his official X handle.
He added that he awaits a full briefing from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and the Nigeria Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) before taking further action.

Obi Calls for Confidence in Infrastructure
Reacting to the derailment, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi urged government to prioritise public trust in rail transport.
“The rail transport system is a critical component of development, and we must continue to embrace it. I urge authorities to provide medical support to the injured, ensure accountability, and restore confidence in transport infrastructure,” Obi said in a statement on X.

NRC Confirms No Fatalities
The NRC confirmed the derailment occurred shortly after departure from Abuja at 11:00 a.m. with 583 passengers and 15 crew on board. Six people sustained injuries, but no fatalities were recorded.
Managing Director Kayode Opeifa, who earlier accepted responsibility for the incident, assured Nigerians that investigations are ongoing and pledged a safety audit before services resume.
Background of Rail Safety Concerns
The Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor has been closely monitored since the 2022 terrorist attack that killed several passengers. Although recent security measures have reduced risks, derailments raise new concerns over maintenance and safety.
Analysts say the incident underscores the urgency of upgrading Nigeria’s rail infrastructure to meet international standards.
