Tinubu: NIN-SIM Linkage Reduces Fraud, Boosts Security

By: Business/Tech Desk

President Bola Tinubu says the NIN-SIM policy has drastically reduced fraud and strengthened Nigeria’s security architecture.

Digital Identity as National Anchor

Speaking through SGF George Akume at Nigeria’s Identity Day in Abuja, Tinubu described identity as more than a record — “the foundation of citizenship, the gateway to opportunity, and the anchor for national security.”

He praised the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for enrolling 126m Nigerians and clearing a backlog of 2.5m records.

Infrastructure and Innovation

Tinubu highlighted the integration of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) into the NIN system, saying it guarantees trust in digital transactions. He cited uses in pensions, loans, tax, elections, and social programmes.

NIMC DG Abisoye Coker-Odusote said NIN has already enabled student loans worth ₦86bn and verified farmers for subsidies.

Challenges and Enforcement

While praising progress, Tinubu vowed stricter enforcement of mandatory NIN use across all sectors. He said: “Without PKI, citizens cannot trust their data is secure. With PKI, fraud is reduced, services are streamlined, and trust is guaranteed.”

The administration says the NIN system will underpin Nigeria’s digital future, linking security, governance, and economic inclusion.
