Tinubu Flags Off INEC Headquarters Construction, Pledges Transparent Elections

ABUJA, NIGERIA — June 18, 2025 | By IDNN State House Correspondent

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday officially flagged off the construction of a new headquarters for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, describing the edifice as a “monument to transparency, planning, and democratic resilience.”

The groundbreaking ceremony marks the administration’s most symbolic electoral reform gesture yet, as the President pledged to provide INEC with the tools it needs to execute free and credible elections.

“This building will not just house an institution—it will house trust,” Tinubu declared.

The project was initiated under the coordination of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, who received praise from the President for his vision and commitment to infrastructure and governance development.

 INFRASTRUCTURE WITH A DEMOCRATIC PURPOSE

President Tinubu said the new headquarters is more than a structure—it is a hub for innovation, training, data-driven planning, and real-time election monitoring.

“Nigeria’s democracy is not static. It must grow—and so must the institutions that defend it,” Tinubu said.

He assured stakeholders that his government remains committed not only to physical infrastructure but also to strengthening the legal and institutional framework guiding INEC’s independence.

Addressing the contractors and supervisors, Tinubu issued a warning:

“You’re not just pouring concrete; you’re pouring trust into the foundation of this republic.”

 STAKEHOLDER SOLIDARITY

The President also extended appreciation to the INEC leadership and staff, commending their dedication amid the country’s challenging political terrain.

“Our democracy depends on your courage and vigilance,” he noted.

Tinubu reaffirmed that future reforms would focus on resource independence, cybersecurity upgrades, voter education, and ensuring peaceful electoral transitions.

 A SYMBOLIC MOMENT FOR 2027

Coming two years ahead of the next general elections, analysts view the move as a timely strategic effort to rebuild confidence in the electoral process. Critics have accused Tinubu of benefiting from systemic manipulation in 2023—a charge he denies—but this project may serve to reinforce his pro-democracy narrative.

“This is Tinubu rewriting the electoral story in bricks and mortar,” one political analyst told IDNN.
