Tinubu Backed June 12 Annulment – Lamido Fires Explosive Shot

By IDNN Political Desk

ABUJA — In a bombshell revelation, former Jigawa State Governor Sule Lamido has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of supporting the 1993 annulment of Nigeria’s most iconic democratic election. Speaking on Arise News on Sunday, Lamido said Tinubu was “hand-in-glove” with General Ibrahim Babangida in the decision to cancel the June 12 election, which was widely regarded as a victory for late Chief Moshood Abiola.

“I feel highly entertained by Tinubu’s rhetoric,” Lamido said. “The way he’s dramatising his role in Nigeria’s democracy is laughable.”

According to Lamido, Tinubu served as secretary of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) during the period and became politically prominent only after Gen. Sani Abacha seized power. He alleged that Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, also mobilized Lagos market women in support of Babangida’s government.

“NADECO wasn’t formed for June 12,” Lamido claimed. “It was created to fight Abacha, not the annulment.”

Lamido didn’t stop at political history. He challenged Tinubu to settle the alleged ₦45 billion debt owed to the Abiola family—money linked to contracts executed by Abiola’s International Telephone and Telecommunication firm.

“Abiola was doubly punished: first, denied the presidency; second, denied what is owed to him,” Lamido stated.

The former governor claimed Babangida personally acknowledged both Abiola’s election victory and the debt during a private visit.
