Real Madrid, PSG, Atalanta, and Galatasaray Confirm UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Spots

Several heavyweights and surprise packages have confirmed their places in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 following the conclusion of the play-off ties.

Real Madrid Edges Benfica

At the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid secured a 3-1 aggregate victory over Benfica with a 2-1 win in the second leg. Vinicius Junior netted the decisive goal 10 minutes from time, calmly finishing across goal to seal the win.

Champions League round of 16

Benfica briefly threatened an upset when Rafa Silva scored first, but Aurelien Tchouameni quickly responded with a fine effort from the edge of the area. Vinicius’ late strike ensured the holders progressed. Real Madrid will face either Manchester City or Sporting CP in the next round.

PSG Overcomes Monaco

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the Round of 16 after a dramatic 2-2 draw with AS Monaco, securing a 5-4 aggregate win. Monaco initially led through Maghnes Akliouche’s goal, but Mamadou Coulibaly’s red card shifted the momentum.

PSG equalized through Marquinhos, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired in the winner after Achraf Hakimi’s shot was parried. Monaco’s Jordan Teze scored a late consolation. PSG will now face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next stage.

Atalanta’s Dramatic Turnaround

In one of the most dramatic comebacks of the play-off stage, Atalanta BC overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on aggregate. Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta leveled the tie before Mario Pasalic put Atalanta ahead.

Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi almost forced extra time, but a penalty awarded to Atalanta deep into stoppage time, following a VAR review, sealed their progression. Lazar Samardzic converted from the spot, sending Atalanta through. They will play either Arsenal or Bayern Munich next.

Galatasaray Triumphs in Extra Time

Galatasaray SK edged Juventus FC 7-5 on aggregate after extra-time drama. Holding a 5-2 advantage from the first leg, Galatasaray saw Juventus level the tie after 90 minutes. Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen restored Galatasaray’s lead in extra time, and Burak Yilmaz added another to seal their progression.

Galatasaray will now face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur FC.
