At least 24 people have died in two communities in Ondo State, prompting health and police investigations into the cause of the deaths after several residents were reported to have consumed locally prepared substances.
The deaths were recorded in Odigbo town and Araromi-Obu in Odigbo Local Government Area, where officials said eight people died in Araromi-Obu and 16 in Odigbo town.
Several other residents were also reported to have received hospital treatment.
But authorities have not established what caused the deaths.
Taiwo Adegoroye, chairman of Odigbo Local Government Area, confirmed the death toll and said medical examinations were required before officials could determine why the victims died.
The incident was reported to have occurred on Saturday, September 5.
What investigators know — and what they do not
Residents were reported to have consumed locally prepared substances described variously in reports as herbal preparations or locally brewed drinks before some became ill.
That sequence does not, by itself, establish that the substances caused the deaths.
Adegoroye said preliminary assessment indicated a possible connection, but further medical examination was necessary.
Ondo State Commissioner for Health Banji Ajaka also confirmed that health authorities were investigating and had yet to establish the precise cause of death.
The absence of a confirmed medical finding remains the most important unresolved issue in the case.
Police open investigation
The Ondo State Police Command has also opened an investigation into the deaths.
Police said officers, medical personnel and health authorities were gathering evidence while awaiting further laboratory and medical findings.
The command cautioned against drawing conclusions about the substances reportedly consumed before investigators establish a cause.
That warning is significant because descriptions of the material involved have varied across reports.
No publicly released toxicology, autopsy or equivalent medical finding has yet established a specific substance as the cause of death.
Precautionary restrictions imposed
Local authorities in Odigbo have imposed restrictions on the sale and consumption of locally brewed alcoholic drinks in the affected area as a precaution while investigations continue.
Officials said the measure was intended to reduce possible further risk.
The deaths have generated anxiety across the affected communities, where residents are seeking answers over how so many people died within the same local government area.
