Oba Ewuare II Marks 10th Coronation Anniversary in Benin

Oba Ewuare II Marks 10 Years on Benin Throne as Artefact Returns From Netherlands

BENIN CITY — Oba Ewuare II has marked 10 years on the throne of the Benin Kingdom with ceremonies across Benin City, as the anniversary also coincided with the return of a Benin artefact from the Netherlands.

The monarch marked his 10th coronation anniversary on October 20, 2026, the same day as his 73rd birthday.

The Royal Palace’s official anniversary programme runs from October 4 to November 21 and includes cultural events, sport, heritage exhibitions, thanksgiving, royal receptions and public celebrations.

Ten years on the throne

Oba Ewuare II was crowned on October 20, 2016 as the 40th Oba of Benin.

Before ascending the throne, he served as a Nigerian diplomat, including postings in Europe and Africa.

The Palace has framed the anniversary around culture, continuity and restoration. Those descriptions represent the Palace’s own assessment of the reign.

President Bola Tinubu also congratulated the monarch on both the anniversary and his birthday, praising his role in cultural preservation and the campaign for the return of Benin artefacts.

Those characterisations remain presidential tribute language.

Artefact return adds heritage dimension

A significant development during the anniversary was the presentation of a Benin artefact returned from the Netherlands.

The handover took place at the Oba’s Palace on October 20 as part of the anniversary programme.

Dutch representatives, including officials connected with Museum De Fundatie, participated in the presentation.

Reporting on the return links the object to the historical dispersal of Benin cultural property following the 1897 British invasion.

That provenance applies to the specific object reported in this handover and should not automatically be extended to every Benin artefact now held or returned from abroad.

Culture and youth built into programme

The anniversary schedule includes a food festival, art and photo exhibition, cultural festival, football, wrestling, chess, children’s activities and an Oba Erediauwa memorial lecture.

October 20 activities included thanksgiving at Holy Aruosa Cathedral, reception of traditional rulers and cultural events at the Palace.

Further activities, including a durbar, golf tournament and artefact exhibition, are scheduled into November.

The programme therefore extends beyond ceremony into heritage education, youth participation, tourism and public cultural display.

Restitution questions remain open

The return of one artefact does not resolve the wider restitution debate.

Questions remain over how returned Benin objects are documented, conserved, housed, displayed and made accessible to the public.

The Palace continues to make the recovery of Benin cultural property an institutional priority.

That makes the anniversary not only a royal milestone, but also part of a larger argument about cultural ownership, preservation and public access.

A decade and a heritage test

For supporters of the monarchy, the anniversary marks a decade of continuity under Oba Ewuare II.

For the wider public, one of the more consequential questions is what happens to cultural assets as more objects return to Benin.

The anniversary therefore sits at the intersection of tradition, heritage policy and institutional stewardship.
