Haaland Fires Norway Past Ivory Coast As Brazil Test Awaits

Norway are into the World Cup last 16 after Erling Haaland struck late to seal a dramatic 2-1 win over Ivory Coast and deliver the country’s first World Cup knockout victory.

Antonio Nusa gave Norway the lead with a curling first-half finish, but Ivory Coast fought back through a brilliant Amad Diallo equaliser before Haaland decided the tie in the closing stages. Haaland’s winner came in the 86th minute, confirming Norway’s first ever World Cup knockout win.

It was not comfortable. It was not clean. But it was historic.

Norway survived pressure, rode out Ivory Coast’s second-half surge and found the one player they would want on the end of a late chance. Haaland did the rest.

Nusa Lights The Spark

Norway started with purpose, and Haaland quickly got his first sight of goal, though his early header was blocked.

Ivory Coast grew into the game, with Nicolas Pepe and Yan Diomande giving Norway warning signs. The African side had moments of danger and began to ask questions of Norway’s defence.

But just when the first half looked set to drift, Nusa changed the mood.

The winger cut in from the left and curled a fine strike beyond Yahia Fofana, giving Norway the breakthrough and turning a cagey tie into a live knockout battle.

That goal gave Norway control on the scoreboard, but not total comfort.

Ivory Coast kept coming.

Amad Gives Ivory Coast Hope

The second half belonged, for long spells, to Ivory Coast’s push for a way back.

Pepe threatened again, and Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland had to stay alert. The pressure grew through corners, deliveries and direct running, with Ivory Coast refusing to let their historic campaign end quietly.

Then Amad made his mark.

The Manchester United forward, introduced from the bench, danced through the Norwegian defence and produced a powerful finish to level the match. It was one of the standout individual moments of the tie and gave Ivory Coast the belief that the game had turned.

For a brief spell, momentum belonged to the Elephants.

Norway had been pushed back. Ivory Coast had energy. The crowd could feel the shift.

Then Haaland appeared.

Haaland Decides It

Great strikers do not need a perfect match to change a tournament.

Haaland had been kept quieter than Norway would have wanted, but he stayed alive. When Patrick Berg squared the ball late on, the Manchester City forward arrived where the danger was and finished the moment.

That is the difference Haaland gives Norway.

Even when the match is tight, even when the opponent has momentum, even when chances are scarce, one movement can be enough.

Ivory Coast still had one final push. Nyland had to tip Amad’s late free-kick over the bar to stop the match from twisting again.

But Norway held on.

Ivory Coast Exit With Pride

For Ivory Coast, this was a painful ending, but not an empty one.

The Elephants were playing beyond the group stage for the first time and leave having gone further than ever at the World Cup. They created enough danger to trouble Norway, won a stream of corners and pushed the tie into its final moments.

What they lacked was the final edge. Amad gave them hope. Haaland took it away.

That will sting, but Ivory Coast’s campaign should still be remembered as progress. They reached a stage they had never reached before and gave a strong account of themselves against a Norway side with one of world football’s most ruthless finishers.

Brazil Wait For Norway

Brazil await in the last 16, giving Haaland and Martin Odegaard the kind of World Cup stage Norway have waited generations to experience. Current reports confirm Norway’s win sets up a Round of 16 meeting with Brazil.

That fixture will demand more control, more precision and more defensive authority.

But for now, Norway have earned the right to dream.

They have qualified, survived the group stage, won a knockout game and kept Haaland alive in the tournament.

Ivory Coast made them suffer. Haaland made them history.
