“This Pain Belongs to All of Us”

Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda has paid a solemn condolence visit to Niger State, mourning alongside families of victims of the devastating Mokwa flood disaster that claimed over 100 lives in late May.

Speaking in Mokwa town, Radda described the scale of the tragedy as “national in dimension” and warned that without urgent flood infrastructure, similar catastrophes will continue to claim innocent lives across Nigeria.

“This pain belongs to all of us. What happened in Mokwa must never happen again — anywhere in Nigeria,” he said.

The Disaster That Shook a Nation

The Mokwa flood, caused by a collapsed bridge following torrential rainfall, swept through farmlands, homes, and commuter vehicles — including multiple passenger buses.

Local officials reported:

  • 100+ lives lost

  • Dozens injured

  • Livestock, vehicles, and crops destroyed

  • Major transportation routes cut off

Families are still recovering bodies, while hundreds have been rendered homeless.

Radda’s Message: Solidarity + Systems Reform

Radda, accompanied by members of the Katsina Emergency Response Agency, delivered relief items including:

  • Medical supplies

  • Food packs

  • Clothing and blankets

  • Temporary shelter kits

He used the visit to call on the Federal Government to declare Mokwa and similar areas disaster-prone zones and accelerate investments in flood-proof infrastructure and climate-resilient bridges.

💬 “North Must Not Wait for Abuja”

Radda also called on northern governors to pool resources and create a Joint Emergency Response Trust Fund to handle disasters.

“We can’t keep reacting when people are already dead. We need proactive investment, not condolence rituals.”
