Legendary Nigerian midfielder John Obi Mikel has unleashed a scathing critique of Chelsea Football Club’s transfer decisions, singling out the club’s preference for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap over Nigerian powerhouse Victor Osimhen.
Mikel, who spent over a decade at Stamford Bridge and won multiple titles, questioned whether the Blues were serious about winning the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this July.
“Delap Is Not Ready” — Mikel Pulls No Punches
“I like Liam Delap. He’s a good young striker,” Mikel told The London Standard. “But is he a proven goalscorer in the Premier League? Can he do it at a big club like Chelsea? That’s the question.”
While Delap scored 12 goals last season for relegated Ipswich, Mikel emphasized that Chelsea needed a “finished product” to compete for titles — especially with £100 million prize money at stake in the Club World Cup.

“Victor Osimhen is the guy,” Mikel said. “If you want someone who’ll come in, get you goals, win you trophies, and push you to top-four — you pay the big bucks. That’s what top clubs do.”
Osimhen, currently at Napoli, has been courted by top clubs across Europe but high wage demands have reportedly scared off suitors. Mikel, however, insisted that Chelsea’s DNA is about instant results, not development gambles.

“This club doesn’t wait for players to evolve over four years,” Mikel added. “We win now. That’s the culture. We won with Drogba, with Hazard, with Terry. So why gamble when there’s a sure thing out there?”
