Tottenham Hotspur have completed the signing of Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United in a club-record £85m deal, giving Roberto De Zerbi another major piece for his rebuild.
The 21-year-old arrives after two Premier League seasons that raised his profile and turned him into one of the most expensive young midfielders in English football.
For Spurs, the transfer is more than another summer signing. It is a major statement of intent from a club backing De Zerbi’s attempt to reshape the team with energy, technical quality and midfield control.
Fernandes has signed a six-year contract after completing the move from West Ham. Current reports also describe the transfer as a club-record £85m deal for Tottenham.
Spurs Back De Zerbi With Big Money
Fernandes’ arrival strengthens a Tottenham midfield that is being rebuilt around intensity and ball progression.
The Portugal international came through Sporting CP’s academy before making his breakthrough in Portugal. He later impressed during a loan spell at Estoril, earned a move to Southampton and then joined West Ham in August 2025.
At West Ham, Fernandes established himself as a high-value young midfielder. He featured in every Premier League match after arriving at the London Stadium, contributed three goals and four assists, and finished among the division’s leading tacklers.
That profile explains why Spurs have moved so aggressively.
Fernandes is not being signed only for potential. Tottenham are paying for a player they believe can handle the Premier League immediately while still developing into a long-term pillar of the team.

Fernandes Points To Spurs Project
Fernandes said De Zerbi’s role was central to his decision to join Tottenham.
“I’m very excited for this next step. Spurs is a massive club and the Head Coach was a key part of why I have decided to join,” Fernandes said.
“When we spoke, it was very special. We look at football in the same way — going onto the pitch as a strong team, with fight and energy, to try and win every game. I can’t wait to get started, to meet the fans, to meet everyone, and give everything for the Club.”
Those comments fit the wider direction of Tottenham’s summer. De Zerbi wants a side that can play through pressure, press with purpose and carry the ball with authority from midfield.
Fernandes gives Spurs another player built for that structure.
Pressure Now Follows The Price Tag
The deal also brings pressure. An £85m fee changes the expectation around Fernandes and Tottenham. Spurs are not simply adding squad depth. They are making one of the defining investments of their window.
Sporting director Johan Lange described Fernandes as a player with “outstanding technical ability, intelligence and maturity.” He also said Tottenham believe the club is the right place for the midfielder to take the next step.
De Zerbi also praised Fernandes’ quality on the ball, work rate and ability to perform under pressure.
Now Tottenham must turn that promise into results. Fernandes arrives with talent, Premier League experience and a clear role in the project. But the size of the fee means his performances will be judged quickly.
For Spurs, this is a signing built around ambition. For Fernandes, it is the biggest test of his career so far.
