Four arrested over alleged Lagos mob killing as police transfer case to SCID

Lagos Police arrest four over alleged mob killing, transfer case to SCID

Lagos State Police say four people have been arrested in connection with the alleged mob killing of Basit Kolade on Lagos Island.

The arrests materially advance the investigation into Kolade’s death after a road incident on Freeman Street on September 2.

Police identified the four arrested people as Khalid Rafiq, 20; Gafar Rahim, 21; Ibrahim Azeez, 33; and Samos Momoh, 21.

The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, for further investigation.

The arrests do not establish guilt.

Police give preliminary account of road incident

According to Lagos Police, Kolade was travelling with his spouse when a motorcycle allegedly struck his vehicle from behind.

Police say an argument followed.

The command says Kolade’s vehicle later reversed and hit the motorcycle, causing the rider and motorcycle to fall.

People then gathered at the scene, and some allegedly attacked Kolade with dangerous weapons.

That remains the police preliminary account of events.

It has not been tested in court.

Kolade confirmed dead at hospital

Police say Kolade was taken to Lagos Island General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.

The motorcycle rider survived, according to the command.

Police also say Kolade’s spouse was present during the incident and was rescued.

IDNN is withholding unnecessary personal details about the surviving individuals.

Four arrested as SCID takes over

Lagos Police say investigators have so far arrested four people in connection with the case.

The command also says efforts are continuing to identify and arrest other people suspected of taking part in the attack.

Police are investigating Kolade’s death as a homicide.

That describes the direction of the investigation.

It does not establish that any particular arrested person committed homicide.

What has changed

The breaking update advances the earlier story in three material ways.

Four people are now in police custody.

The investigation has been transferred to SCID, Panti.

And police say the search for additional suspects is continuing.

What remains unresolved is equally important.

The individual roles of those arrested have not been established in court.

No conviction has been recorded.

And the complete sequence of the road incident and subsequent attack remains subject to investigation.

For now, the verified position is limited:

Basit Kolade died after an alleged mob attack following a road incident on Lagos Island.

Four people have been arrested in connection with the case.

The investigation is now with SCID, Panti.

The allegations against those arrested remain unproven.
