Lagos Court Convicts Trader, Two Companies in NAFDAC Fake-Drug Case

Lagos Court Fines Trader N1.5m After Guilty Plea in Fake-Drug Case

A Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, has convicted trader Elijah Chigbogu and two companies in a case brought by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control over fake and unregistered pharmaceutical products.

Chigbogu, Prolife & Well Pharmaceutical Limited and God of Elijah Nigeria Limited pleaded guilty to four counts.

Justice Musa Kakaki adopted a plea-bargain agreement and convicted the defendants.

Chigbogu was fined N1.5 million.

Case involved fake and unregistered medicines

The four counts involved possession and display for sale of fake pharmaceutical products, as well as the importation and distribution of unregistered medicines.

Court reporting linked the offences to activities at premises in Idumota and Ikotun-Egbe, Lagos, on July 28, 2025.

The guilty pleas and convictions distinguish the case from an arrest or charge-stage proceeding.

The convictions should, however, be reported only within the scope of the offences before the court.

Court adopts plea-bargain agreement

The defendants entered guilty pleas during the proceedings.

Justice Kakaki subsequently adopted the plea-bargain agreement and recorded convictions against them.

The court imposed a N1.5 million fine on Chigbogu.

Current reporting reviewed by IDNN does not clearly establish the separate penalties imposed on Prolife & Well Pharmaceutical Limited and God of Elijah Nigeria Limited.

Those amounts should not be stated without the judgment or another authoritative court record.

Case highlights medicine-safety enforcement

The case forms part of NAFDAC’s enforcement against fake and unregistered pharmaceutical products.

For consumers, the public-health risk arises when medicines enter the market outside regulatory controls designed to verify their registration and safety status.

For regulators, the wider accountability question is whether enforcement can prevent falsified or unregistered products from reaching markets and patients.

The immediate court outcome is established: Chigbogu and the two companies were convicted after guilty pleas, while Chigbogu received a N1.5 million fine.
