Labour Party Under Nenadi Usman Backs Peter Obi’s Coalition Role, Dismisses Abure Faction

Labour Party Affirms Obi’s Coalition Role, Labels Abure’s Opposition Illegal and Contemptuous

The Labour Party leadership under Senator Nenadi Esther Usman has reaffirmed its full support for Peter Obi’s active participation in the 2027 opposition coalition, dismissing recent criticisms from suspended former chairman Julius Abure as legally void and politically provocative.

The statement issued by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the National Chairman, comes amid rising tensions following Obi’s visible presence at ongoing coalition-building meetings in Abuja, aimed at dislodging the APC government in 2027.

“Obi’s efforts are in complete alignment with the values and principles of the Labour Party. The National Working Committee (NWC) under Senator Usman fully authorized and endorses his participation,” the statement declared.

Abure’s Opposition ‘Contemptuous of Supreme Court Ruling’

The Usman-led faction cited the Supreme Court’s April 4, 2025 ruling, which nullified Abure’s position as party chairman and recognized the expiration of the 2019-elected NWC’s tenure as of June 8, 2024.

“It is baffling that individuals already sacked by the highest court continue to parade themselves as party leaders. Their reference to the 2024 ‘convention’ is contemptuous and should be treated accordingly,” Asogwa said.

He accused Abure and his allies of attempting to sabotage a nationally relevant rescue effort for selfish political gain.

Obi’s Coalition Vision in Line with LP’s Mandate

The statement defended Peter Obi’s participation in the convergence of opposition voices, noting that the former presidential candidate has consistently advocated for a coalition driven by shared purpose—eradicating hunger, insecurity, and misgovernance.

“This is not about ambition, but nation-building. Obi is acting in the interest of millions of Nigerians—and with the full blessing of the Labour Party leadership,” the statement added.

Warning to the Public and the Press

The party also warned the public to disregard any media statements or press releases emanating from individuals aligned with the Abure faction, labeling them “impostors.”

“All credible communications about the Labour Party must emanate from the office of the duly recognized National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman,” Asogwa reiterated.
