Opposition realignment deepens ahead of 2027 as coalition adopts Obi’s production economy agenda

In a major political development that signals deepening realignment within Nigeria’s opposition bloc, the Imo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has thrown its full weight behind former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, as its preferred 2027 presidential candidate.
The declaration followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting of the Imo ADC Working Committee led by Chairman James Okoroma. Speaking to journalists after the session, Okoroma emphasized that Obi’s ideological framework and political momentum make him the “most electable candidate” to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next general election.
“We are not surrendering our structure — we are aligning with a bigger vision,” Okoroma said. “Obi’s message is our message: building from consumption to production. He represents hope, and we believe he can deliver electoral victory.”
ADC denies ‘hijack’ fears, insists on coalition spirit of “give and take”
In response to concerns from older members about a possible takeover of the party, Okoroma — who contested as ADC’s gubernatorial candidate in 2023 — reassured the rank-and-file that the party remains intact and autonomous.
“This isn’t a merger, and it’s not a hijack. We must develop a spirit of give and take. Those coming into the fold are here to build — not to scatter.”
He emphasized that the party’s survival and growth lie in uniting with like-minded partners committed to national redemption. The stakeholders’ forum was designed to allay fears and correct misconceptions about the coalition’s structure.

Onyeagucha: Obi’s doctrine now national, statesmen must stay in party
Speaking at the meeting, former Imo Secretary to State Government Uche Onyeagucha doubled down on the party’s embrace of Obi’s agenda, which centers on economic transformation and accountability.
“We’re adopting Peter Obi’s doctrine because he inspires belief that a new Nigeria is possible. But we’re not pushing others out — every aspirant must remain. They’re statesmen, and their place in this movement is critical,” he noted.
Onyeagucha warned that internal discord could sabotage the opposition’s 2027 chances and underscored the coalition’s goal of reducing poverty, insecurity, and hunger under a unified banner.
ADC: Obi the vehicle, coalition the engine
Describing the ADC as Nigeria’s “largest opposition platform by vision and breadth,” stakeholders at the meeting said the coalition sees Peter Obi as a vessel — not a competitor. While other aspirants are respected, the priority is defeating the APC.
“It’s not about who flies the flag, it’s about who can win,” one party elder said. “Obi has a movement, we have a structure. Together, we have a chance.”
The move is expected to bolster Obi’s 2027 base, especially in the South-East, where political fragmentation has often undermined electoral strength. Analysts say the ADC’s declaration of loyalty may spur similar endorsements from other mid-tier parties.
