Rivers Governor Fubara Sacks Cabinet After Supreme Court Blow

IDNN Politics Desk

Cabinet Dissolution on Independence Week

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has sacked his entire cabinet following a Supreme Court ruling that voided approvals by the pro-Fubara Oko-Jumbo-led House of Assembly. The decision, delivered earlier this year, effectively stripped Fubara’s faction of legitimacy while recognising the rival assembly aligned with his predecessor and now FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

Supreme Court Fallout

The apex court’s ruling rendered all commissioners previously confirmed by the Oko-Jumbo assembly invalid. On Independence week, Fubara moved to dissolve his cabinet, signalling both legal compliance and political vulnerability. At a valedictory session, he told outgoing commissioners: “You served with commitment. This is not the end of our relationship.”

Wike vs Fubara: The Endless Feud

The sack highlights the relentless feud between Fubara and Wike. Once allies, the two men have battled over control of Rivers’ political machinery since 2023. Their rivalry triggered a state of emergency earlier this year and continues to paralyse governance in one of Nigeria’s oil-rich hubs.

  • Vacuum: Ministries face delays as new cabinet nominees are awaited.
  • Instability: Investors eye political risk in Nigeria’s top oil state.
  • Federal Pull: With the Supreme Court siding with Wike’s loyalists, Fubara’s authority appears diminished.

Commercial Tag: Oil State, Political Risk

For a state that contributes billions in oil revenues, Rivers’ instability threatens both economic confidence and federal revenue streams. The cabinet sack deepens fears that governance is hostage to political wars.
