Fire destroys seven shops in Benin City, traders count losses

Fire destroys seven shops in Edo as traders count livelihood losses

An early morning fire destroyed seven shops in Benin City on Sunday, wiping out goods and leaving affected traders facing fresh livelihood losses.

The fire broke out around 3am along Amen Owie Street, opposite Delano Hotels, off Second Ugbor Road in the Abuja Quarters area of Edo State.

No life was reported lost in the incident, but shop owners said goods and equipment inside the affected stores were destroyed. The total value of the losses had not been established as of the time of reporting.

Residents race to contain the fire

Residents who noticed the fire alerted shop owners and moved to stop it from spreading further.

Some reportedly broke down shop doors and evacuated valuables from adjoining stores, helping to limit the damage to seven shops.

For those whose businesses were hit, however, the damage went beyond burnt property.

One affected trader said the fire destroyed goods and the source of income tied to the shop, underlining the immediate economic consequence for small business owners operating in the area.

Cause remains unconfirmed

Some shop owners linked the outbreak to an electrical appliance they alleged had been left switched on inside one of the stores.

They also said the fire started shortly after electricity supply was restored to the area.

But that account has not been officially established as the cause of the fire.

Without a technical finding from fire or electrical authorities, the reported power-supply link remains a resident account rather than a confirmed explanation.

Traders raise questions over emergency response

Affected traders also said they had difficulty getting the Edo State Fire Service to the scene because of the hour at which the incident occurred.

The available reporting does not establish an official response from the fire service explaining when it was alerted, when personnel arrived or what operational constraints may have affected its response.

That leaves an accountability question beyond the immediate cause of the blaze: how quickly could emergency services respond if a larger fire broke out in a similar neighbourhood overnight?

For the traders along Amen Owie Street, the more immediate challenge is recovery.

The fire is out, but seven businesses now face the task of replacing lost stock and rebuilding income — before investigators have established exactly what caused the flames.
