Former Delta governor Emmanuel Uduaghan dies at 71

Former Delta State Governor Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan has died at the age of 71.

His family announced that Uduaghan died on the morning of Monday, October 19, 2026, in a statement issued on its behalf by Toju Uduaghan.

The family described his death as a major loss to his relatives, Delta State and Nigeria.

Uduaghan, a medical doctor, served as governor of Delta State for two terms between 2007 and 2015.

From medicine to public office

Before becoming governor, Uduaghan served as Delta State Commissioner for Health from 1999 to 2003.

He later became Secretary to the State Government, serving from 2003 until 2007 before succeeding James Ibori as governor.

His public career therefore spanned medicine, health administration and two terms at the head of the Delta State government.

Family confirms death

The Uduaghan family said the former governor died on the morning of October 19.

The formal family statement reviewed by IDNN did not provide a medical cause of death.

A separate family-source report said Uduaghan died in an Abuja hospital after a period of illness. That account should not be strengthened into a definitive medical cause without further family or medical confirmation.

Uduaghan was born on October 22, 1954, meaning he died three days before his 72nd birthday.

Tributes begin across Delta

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was among those who paid tribute following Uduaghan’s death, recalling his years in public service.

Such assessments remain attributed tributes rather than independent conclusions by IDNN.

Further reactions are expected from political associates, professional colleagues, traditional institutions and communities across Delta State.

A career spanning health and government

Uduaghan’s career combined medicine and politics.

His earlier role as health commissioner placed him in charge of one of the state’s core public-service sectors before he moved into wider government administration as Secretary to the State Government and later governor.

For the public record, the next developments will include formal family announcements on burial arrangements, further institutional tributes and any additional clarification on the circumstances of his death.

As of the latest material reviewed by IDNN, verified funeral and burial arrangements had not been established.
