Chimamanda Adichie: ‘Nigeria’s Middle Class Now Begs to Survive’

Celebrated Nigerian author and public intellectual, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has issued a stark warning over the deteriorating economic situation in Nigeria, lamenting that those once considered securely middle class are now begging to survive.

Speaking in an interview on Channels Television, Adichie said the country’s worsening hardship should be the most important measure by which political leadership is judged.

“Life has become so hard in Nigeria. People who were formerly securely middle class — not that life was rosy, but they got by — are now people who beg and are in need. That worries me greatly,” she said.

She pointed to skyrocketing food prices and the inability of minimum wage earners to meet basic needs as evidence of a society in distress.

 A Nation Under Strain

Adichie argued that while stock market figures and economic indices may capture headlines, the true test of governance is the daily reality of ordinary Nigerians.

“I care about the person earning minimum wage — how is that person getting on in this economy? It’s the suffering that worries me the most. And it’s terrible,” she stressed.

She warned that prolonged hardship could push some Nigerians towards desperate, even criminal, measures, creating a security risk for the country.

 No Excuse for Crime, But…

While condemning crime, Adichie emphasized that extreme poverty and hopelessness can make individuals contemplate actions they would never have considered under better conditions.

“It’s not to excuse crime, but when life gets very hard, even people who before would not have considered certain things suddenly are willing to. That’s dangerous to society,” she said.

Her remarks add to growing calls for urgent policy measures to address inflation, unemployment, and economic inequality, with analysts noting that public trust in government will erode further if tangible relief is not felt soon.
