Bala Mohammed Rules Out Muslim-Muslim Ticket, Eyes 2027 PDP Strategy

By IDNN Politics Desk

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has ruled out the possibility of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presenting a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Tonight, Mohammed insisted that the PDP would prioritise religious and cultural diversity to avoid what he called the “blunder” of the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2023.

“We don’t want to make the mistake of the APC. We need a Christian from the South as presidential candidate so that he will lead the majority of Christian southerners, with a Muslim vice president from the North. That way, we reflect Nigeria’s balance and diversity,” he said.

He dismissed speculation of a Seyi Makinde/Bala Mohammed ticket, but conceded it was not impossible.

“It depends on what Nigerians want. If they want continuation of this clueless administration, then it is their choice. But certainly, the pedigree of Seyi and my humble self at subnational level speaks for itself,” he added.

The governor stressed that PDP’s focus remains on unity and building a credible alternative to the ruling party.

While declining to confirm his own presidential ambition, Mohammed left open the possibility of joining the race if the party and Nigerians demanded it.

The ruling APC’s decision to field a Muslim-Muslim ticket in 2023 was widely criticised for ignoring Nigeria’s diversity. Mohammed warned that the PDP would not make the same mistake.

As internal debates continue, attention has turned to potential contenders. Alongside Makinde and Mohammed, other governors and senior PDP figures are being tipped for the 2027 race.

Analysts say the PDP’s ability to present a balanced ticket could be decisive in its attempt to challenge President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima at the polls.
