Abia Warriors’ Coach Imama Amapakabo Reflects on 2-1 Home Defeat to Nasarawa United

Abia Warriors’ head coach, Imama Amapakabo, has downplayed his team’s disappointing 2-1 home defeat to Nasarawa United in the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) matchday 22 clash at the Umuahia Township Stadium. Despite the loss, Amapakabo emphasized the resilience of his side and refused to single out any player, including goalkeeper Okiemute Odah, for the defeat.

The game saw Abia Warriors take the lead through Chukwuemeka Obioma’s header in the 42nd minute, following a well-delivered cross from Ekpere Oguocha. However, Nasarawa United responded with two quick goals after the break. Habibu Alakija leveled the score before Istifanus Goma struck the winner in the 55th minute.

Amapakabo, who led Rangers to the NPFL title in 2015/2016, took a calm approach during the post-match press conference, acknowledging the setback but urging his players not to be discouraged. “This one is done and dusted. We planned for this game to get the three points, but unfortunately, we couldn’t,” he stated. “We have to dust our boots and focus on Wednesday’s game against Wikki Tourists. It’s another opportunity to push for a win.”

He also emphasized that one bad result would not define his team’s season, citing their impressive away form, with five away victories already secured this season. “We don’t crucify players because of one game. We’ve been fantastic on the road — five away wins is something good in itself.”

In his analysis of the match, Amapakabo admitted that his side became complacent after conceding the equalizer and the second goal. He pointed out that the team’s composure dropped, which led to playing too many long balls instead of maintaining possession and controlling the game. “Whenever we were deliberate in our play, we created chances. But on a bad day like this, the ball just refused to go into the net.”

The coach also praised Nasarawa United’s second goal, calling it an audacious strike. “That goal should be applauded. It was one of those goals that bring spectators to the stadium. Congratulations to Nasarawa United.”

Defending goalkeeper Okiemute Odah, who was part of the communication breakdown that led to Nasarawa’s first goal, received Amapakabo’s backing. “Every player has off days. Odah is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in the league and has saved us on several occasions,” Amapakabo remarked.

Despite the disappointment, the coach maintained a forward-looking approach, focusing on the upcoming match against Wikki Tourists. “It’s not time to point fingers. We have a game on Wednesday against Wikki Tourists, and that’s where our focus should be.”
