Rangers Go Three Points Clear at NPFL Summit After Bendel Insurance Victory

Rangers International have opened a three-point lead at the summit of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) after defeating Bendel Insurance 1–0 in a rescheduled fixture on Wednesday, November 4, strengthening their position in the early stages of the 2026/27 title race.

Chidozie Iwundu scored the decisive goal shortly after halftime at the Awka Township Stadium, securing an important victory for the Flying Antelopes and lifting them above Rivers United in the standings.

The result takes Rangers to 21 points from 10 matches, three ahead of Rivers United, Kano Pillars and Bendel Insurance, who have each played 11 games.

Rangers have therefore established their advantage despite playing one match fewer than each of their three nearest challengers.

The development represents a significant shift in the competition’s early leadership, although the title race remains closely contested.

Iwundu’s Goal Sends Rangers to the Summit

Rangers entered Wednesday’s rearranged Matchday Nine encounter knowing that victory would take them clear of the chasing pack.

Both Rangers and Bendel Insurance began the match on 18 points, creating an opportunity for either club to strengthen its position near the top of the table.

The opening half ended goalless as neither team managed to establish a decisive advantage.

Rangers eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the restart.

Iwundu found the net early in the second half, giving the hosts a lead they would maintain until the final whistle.

Bendel Insurance attempted to respond, but the visitors could not find an equaliser.

The narrow victory secured Rangers’ sixth league win of the campaign and moved the Enugu-based club into first place.

It also prevented Bendel Insurance from overtaking their hosts and adding further pressure to Rivers United.

NPFL Standings: Rangers Establish Early Advantage

Wednesday’s result has created a three-point separation between Rangers and the clubs immediately behind them.

According to the NPFL standings recorded following the fixture, Rangers lead with 21 points from 10 matches.

Rivers United occupy second place with 18 points from 11 games, ahead of Kano Pillars and Bendel Insurance on goal difference.

Nasarawa United complete the top five with 17 points.

Rangers’ six victories, three draws and one defeat translate into an average of 2.1 points per match.

By comparison, the three clubs immediately behind them have collected 18 points from 11 fixtures, equivalent to approximately 1.64 points per match.

The difference highlights the efficiency of Rangers’ early-season results.

However, points-per-game figures provide only a snapshot of performance. They do not account for the relative difficulty of fixtures or guarantee future results.

Rangers Capitalise on Rivers United Draw

The leadership change follows Rangers’ 1–1 draw against Rivers United in Port Harcourt on November 1.

That result prevented Rivers from extending their advantage and kept the Flying Antelopes within reach of the summit.

Rangers subsequently faced Bendel Insurance in a rescheduled fixture that offered an opportunity to move clear.

The match had originally been scheduled for October 18 but was postponed because of Rangers’ CAF Champions League commitments.

Completing the outstanding fixture has now altered the standings.

The development illustrates how postponed and rearranged matches can influence the competition’s leadership, particularly when clubs are participating in domestic and continental competitions.

For Rangers, the important achievement was converting an additional fixture into maximum points.

Bendel Insurance Lose Ground in Tight Title Race

Bendel Insurance arrived in Awka following consecutive league victories against Rivers United and Kwara United.

Those results had reinforced their position among the competition’s early contenders.

However, Wednesday’s defeat prevented the Benin-based club from making further progress.

Insurance remain fourth with 18 points from 11 matches, level with Rivers United and Kano Pillars.

Their six victories equal Rangers’ tally, but five defeats have limited their overall points return.

That contrast provides an important insight into the early competition.

Winning matches is essential, but avoiding defeats can be equally significant over a league season.

Rangers have lost only once in their opening 10 fixtures, while Bendel Insurance have suffered five defeats in 11 matches.

The difference has contributed to the three-point gap between the clubs.

Nevertheless, Insurance remain within striking distance of the leaders.

What Rangers’ Lead Means for the NPFL Title Race

Rangers’ position at the summit represents an encouraging start rather than proof that the championship race has been settled.

The competition remains in its early stages, and several clubs are separated by relatively narrow margins.

Rivers United retain the strongest goal difference among the leading four teams, while Kano Pillars and Bendel Insurance remain within three points of Rangers.

The challenge for the Flying Antelopes will be maintaining their results as the season progresses.

Their domestic and continental schedules place demands on squad management, preparation and recovery, although those commitments do not necessarily mean results will deteriorate.

At present, Rangers’ strongest argument is their record.

Six victories from 10 matches have placed them ahead of competitors who have played more frequently.

The significance of that advantage will become clearer as the clubs complete subsequent rounds of fixtures.

Attention Turns to the Next Round

Rangers are scheduled to face Kwara United on Sunday, November 8, as they seek to consolidate their position at the summit.

Bendel Insurance are scheduled to meet Niger Tornadoes, with an opportunity to recover from Wednesday’s defeat.

Both matches could influence the standings.

For Rangers, another victory would provide further evidence that their early-season form can be sustained.

For Insurance, an immediate response would help prevent the gap from widening.

Rivers United and Kano Pillars will also remain central to the contest for leadership.

Wednesday’s result has therefore delivered an important development without establishing a decisive championship advantage.

Rangers International are the NPFL’s new leaders, three points clear of their nearest challengers despite playing one match fewer. Their next challenge is to turn that promising position into sustained consistency.
