Bodija Market Fire Razes 15 Shops in Ibadan, No Casualties Recorded

Fire Razes 15 Shops at Bodija Market in Ibadan

A fire has razed 15 shops at Bodija foodstuffs market in Ibadan, Oyo State, destroying goods and other property before firefighters brought the blaze under control.

The Oyo State Fire Services Agency said the affected shops were part of a row of 44 shops at the market in Ibadan North Local Government Area.

No casualties were recorded.

Firefighters Contain Blaze

Fire officials said the blaze started in one shop before spreading to others.

By the time emergency crews arrived, thick smoke had covered the affected section of the market.

The agency said firefighters immediately began operations and prevented the fire from spreading beyond the affected area.

Electrical Fault Suspected

Oyo fire authorities said a suspected electrical surge linked to faulty wiring was the likely cause of the blaze.

That remains a preliminary assessment and has not been established as a final forensic finding.

The fire service urged traders and property owners to maintain functional fire extinguishers and strengthen fire-safety measures in commercial buildings, shops and homes.

Traders Count Livelihood Losses

The immediate consequence is economic.

Fifteen shops in a major foodstuffs market were affected, leaving traders facing losses to stock, equipment and other property.

The full financial impact has not been independently established.

No verified final figure has been released for the value of goods or property destroyed.

Market Safety Comes Under Scrutiny

The next accountability question is whether electrical systems and fire-safety equipment across the market are routinely inspected.

It also raises a wider question for traders and market managers: whether functioning extinguishers and other basic fire-control equipment are available before another outbreak occurs.
