Ozumba Mbadiwe rehabilitation to begin October 19, Lagos says

Lagos announces 35-day Ozumba Mbadiwe rehabilitation, traffic diversions from October 19

Lagos State says a 35-day rehabilitation of Ozumba Mbadiwe Road is scheduled to begin on Monday, October 19, 2026, with temporary traffic arrangements planned for motorists using the Victoria Island corridor.

The work is expected to cover the section from Adetokunbo Ademola/Civic Centre to Samuel Manuwa/BJ, according to the state’s traffic advisory.

The rehabilitation had not yet begun at the latest verified check on October 16.

Contraflow planned during works

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi said a contraflow arrangement would operate while the rehabilitation is underway.

Traffic is expected to continue through the corridor, but under temporary arrangements that may reduce normal road capacity and increase pressure on adjoining routes.

Motorists have been advised to allow additional travel time and follow instructions from traffic officials.

Alternative routes for motorists

Drivers approaching from Bonny Camp or Falomo towards Civic Centre and Lekki are expected to use alternative inner Victoria Island routes during the works.

Motorists using the Eko Hotel, Adetokunbo Ademola, Akin Adesola and Bishop Aboyade Cole corridors may also be redirected as the rehabilitation progresses.

The precise route motorists should use may depend on their direction of travel and the stage of the works.

LASTMA to manage traffic

The Lagos State Government says officers of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority will be deployed to manage traffic during the rehabilitation period.

For commuters, businesses and residents around Victoria Island, the main consequence will be altered routes, possible delays and increased pressure on nearby roads.

A 35-day schedule, not a guaranteed finish

The state’s announcement establishes the planned start date, corridor and traffic-management arrangements.

It does not establish that rehabilitation has already begun.

It also does not guarantee that the work will be completed within exactly 35 days.

The 35-day period is the government’s current schedule and should be treated as a commitment to be monitored.

What happens next

The first accountability test comes on October 19: whether work begins as announced and whether the planned contraflow and diversion arrangements operate effectively.

IDNN will track commencement, traffic conditions, any changes to the advertised routes, delays to the timetable and the eventual completion of the rehabilitation.

For motorists using Victoria Island, the immediate advice is to plan extra travel time and watch for official traffic updates before the scheduled start of works.
