Abdullahi elected NBBF president as Dikko urges basketball unity

Mustapha Abdullahi has taken control of the Nigeria Basketball Federation after a decisive election victory in Abuja, with National Sports Commission chairman Shehu Dikko calling on a basketball community marked by years of internal division to unite behind the new administration.

Abdullahi, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, secured 40 of the 48 votes cast at the NBBF elective congress. Former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji received eight votes, while former international Ejike Ugboaja did not receive a vote.

He succeeds Musa Kida, whose eight-year tenure at the federation has ended. Ugo Udezue was also elected vice-president unopposed after standing as the sole candidate for the position.

The scale of Abdullahi’s victory gives the incoming board a clear electoral mandate, but the harder test begins beyond the ballot box.

Speaking at the elective congress, Dikko urged stakeholders who backed rival camps during the election to put their differences aside and support the new leadership. He called for Nigerian basketball to move forward “as one family”, framing unity as an immediate priority for the next administration.

That appeal comes against a fractured background. Nigerian basketball has endured repeated leadership disputes and factional battles across multiple election cycles, while questions over administration, domestic competition and player development have continued to follow the federation.

The election itself was also contested before voting began.

Igoche Mark, who had been cleared to contest the presidency, withdrew before the vote and cited concerns about the credibility and fairness of the process.

Separately, a Federal High Court in Abuja adjourned until November 3 a suit challenging the legality of the elective congress. The court did not stop the election from proceeding, leaving the legal challenge unresolved as Abdullahi begins his tenure.

Abdullahi now inherits that political and administrative pressure alongside the sporting job.

Before the election, he identified grassroots development, player welfare, stronger domestic competitions, infrastructure and more professional administration among the areas he wanted to address. Following his victory, he again pledged reforms aimed at rebuilding the sport and expanding development opportunities.

The mandate is therefore larger than an electoral win.

For the new NBBF leadership, the immediate challenge will be whether a commanding vote at congress can be converted into broader legitimacy across Nigerian basketball — and whether Dikko’s call for unity survives the rivalries, grievances and legal questions that accompanied the transition.
