Borno Court Jails Woman for Procuring Teenager for Sexual Exploitation

Borno Court Jails Woman Two Years for Procuring 16-Year-Old for Sexual Exploitation

A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has sentenced 37-year-old Fatima Sanda to two years’ imprisonment after convicting her of procuring a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation by other persons.

The court also ordered Sanda to pay ₦500,000 in compensation to the victim.

The conviction was secured by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, which disclosed the judgment in a statement.

Court convicts under anti-trafficking law

NAPTIP said the case was heard before Justice Aisha M. Ndume at the Borno State High Court in Maiduguri.

According to the agency, Sanda was convicted under Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, as amended.

The offence involved procuring the teenager for sexual exploitation by other persons.

That is the legal description supported by the reviewed judgment and should not be broadened into other offences not established by the court.

Two-year sentence, ₦500,000 compensation ordered

The court imposed a two-year custodial sentence and ordered Sanda to pay ₦500,000 to the victim.

The compensation order is separate from the prison sentence.

The available reporting reviewed by IDNN does not establish that the money has already been paid.

An order to pay compensation is not proof that payment has been completed.

Child’s identity remains protected

The victim is identified publicly only by her age and sex.

IDNN is withholding any information that could identify her directly or indirectly, including her name, school, address, photograph, family links or other unnecessary personal details.

The conviction establishes Sanda’s criminal liability.

It does not remove the child’s right to privacy and dignity.

What the judgment establishes

The verified court outcome is limited and clear:

Sanda was convicted.

The offence involved procuring a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation by other persons.

She was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment.

The court ordered ₦500,000 compensation to the victim.

The available public record does not establish the identities or legal status of the “other persons” referred to in the offence description.

IDNN is therefore not inferring additional defendants, accomplices or a wider trafficking network.

The accountability question

The judgment closes the criminal case against Sanda at this stage, but child-protection accountability does not end with sentencing.

The next questions are whether the compensation order is enforced, what support is available to the child, and whether investigators identify or prosecute any other persons connected to the exploitation described in the conviction.

Those questions require further evidence.

For now, the court record establishes the conviction, sentence and compensation order.
