Cross River tanker fire: Two dead, two critically injured in Odukpani

Two dead, two critically injured in Cross River tanker fire

Two people have been confirmed dead and two others critically injured after a tanker carrying what the Cross River State Government described as diesel caught fire in Odukpani Local Government Area.

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday near the Odukpani Local Government Secretariat.

According to the state government’s preliminary account, the tanker reportedly collided with a stationary truck before overturning and catching fire.

The blaze affected nearby shops and other property.

A later assessment involving the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency and the Nigerian Red Cross Society confirmed two deaths and two critical injuries.

The updated casualty position supersedes earlier reports that had put the toll at one dead and one injured.

Driver later died

Police had initially said the tanker driver was rescued from the vehicle and taken to hospital.

A subsequent police update said the driver later died while receiving treatment. The tanker conductor had earlier been reported dead at the scene.

Emergency responders moved to secure the area and contain the fire as officials began assessing the extent of damage.

Emergency teams assess damage

Cross River SEMA later led a joint assessment of the affected area with the Nigerian Red Cross Society.

The state government said shops and other property were affected, while separate reporting also recorded damage to goods and vehicles around the scene.

For traders and residents in the area, the impact extends beyond the deaths and injuries.

The fire damaged commercial property and disrupted activity around the local government secretariat area.

Cause remains under investigation

The account that the tanker collided with a stationary truck remains preliminary and should not be treated as the conclusion of a completed accident investigation.

No verified finding has established speeding, mechanical failure, poor road conditions, driver error or another specific cause.

The incident nevertheless raises public-safety questions about petroleum-product transport through populated areas, the exposure of roadside businesses and the adequacy of safeguards around tanker movement.

Those questions require further evidence before responsibility can be assigned.

For now, what is confirmed is that two people died, two others were critically injured and emergency officials assessed damage to shops and other property in Odukpani.

What remains unresolved is the final cause of the crash and whether any safety or regulatory failure contributed to it.
