The incident occurred on Saturday, August 15, according to an operational update attributed to the Nigeria Police Force.
Police said the bodies of five victims were recovered after the canoe went down in the river and were later buried according to Islamic rites.
The State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna has opened an investigation into the incident.
