Many Feared Trapped As Three-Storey Student Hostel Collapses In Anambra

Many feared trapped after three-storey student hostel collapses in Anambra

A three-storey building used as a student hostel has collapsed in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State, with an unknown number of occupants feared trapped beneath the rubble.

The building, identified in reports as Elite Five Star Lodge, is located beside Tonimas Filling Station in the Amokpala area of Oko. The collapse was reported on Monday morning, July 27, 2026, after the structure reportedly gave way late Sunday night or in the early hours of Monday.

The Anambra State Police Command said a police-led joint security team was involved in the response and that rescue operations were ongoing. Police spokesperson Tochukwu Ikenga was quoted as saying the command was working with relevant agencies at the scene.

As of this report, officials cited in available reports had not confirmed how many people were inside the building, how many had been rescued, whether there were fatalities, or what caused the collapse. Early reports described the affected occupants as mostly students, but that detail has not yet been independently verified by IDNN.

Beyond the immediate rescue effort, the collapse raises urgent questions for state emergency and building-control authorities: whether the structure was approved for hostel use, when it was last inspected, who owns or manages the lodge, and what safety records exist. Those questions remain unanswered in the available source record.

For families and students in Oko, the immediate concern is rescue and identification. For Anambra authorities, the next public-interest duty is to establish what happened, account for those affected and disclose what records exist on the collapsed hostel.

IDNN is holding all claims about casualty figures, structural failure, poor materials, ownership responsibility and regulatory blame until emergency responders, building-control authorities or official records establish them.
