Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football after Algeria’s 2-0 defeat to Switzerland ended their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in the Round of 32.
The 35-year-old confirmed after Friday’s defeat in Vancouver that he had played his final match for the Desert Warriors, closing one of the most important chapters in modern Algerian football.
Switzerland punished Algeria at decisive moments, with Breel Embolo opening the scoring before Dan Ndoye added the second after the restart. The result sent the Swiss into the last 16 and left Algeria with no route back into the tournament.
Mahrez said Algeria had hoped to go further but admitted their mistakes proved costly at World Cup level.
“We aimed to go through and I think it was a game we could have won,” Mahrez said in his post-match interview, according to reports.
“But we conceded twice on mistakes and at this level, you can’t get away with it. There are always positives to take away from matches: we did manage to get out of the group stage, but we conceded too many goals to aspire to more. This was my last match with Algeria.”
Algeria Punished As Mahrez Bows Out
Algeria entered the knockout tie with hope after reaching the Round of 32, but Switzerland controlled the bigger moments.
Embolo’s first-half goal put Algeria under pressure early. Ndoye’s second after the break then gave the Swiss the cushion they needed to manage the game.
Mahrez was withdrawn around the 70th minute, a substitution that became the final act of his Algeria career.
For Algeria, the defeat was not just a World Cup exit. It was the end of an era built around one of the country’s most gifted and influential players.
AFCON Hero Leaves A Heavy Legacy
Mahrez’s international legacy is secure. He was central to Algeria’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations triumph and produced one of the defining moments of that tournament when he scored a stoppage-time free-kick against Nigeria in the semi-finals.
That goal sent Algeria into the final and remains one of the most painful AFCON memories for Nigerian fans. For Algerians, it became a symbol of Mahrez’s authority, nerve and quality in the national shirt.
Reports credited Mahrez with 119 appearances and 85 goal involvements for Algeria, underlining the scale of his contribution across more than a decade of international football.
His departure now leaves Algeria with a leadership gap and a major identity question as the national team begins life beyond one of its modern greats.
For Mahrez, the farewell came in pain rather than celebration. But his place in Algerian football history had already been secured long before the final whistle in Vancouver.
