Former Nigeria international John Utaka has been appointed head coach of Montpellier’s women’s team, marking a significant career milestone for the ex-Super Eagles striker.

The 43-year-old replaces outgoing manager Frédéric Mendy and will share duties with Baptiste Merle until the end of the season, under the supervision of sporting director Jean-Louis Saez.

Utaka’s appointment makes him the only African head coach in France’s top-tier women’s league. The Nigerian enjoyed a decorated playing career, most notably with Montpellier, where he scored twice in the decisive match that secured the club’s first Ligue 1 title in the 2011–12 season.

After retiring in 2018, Utaka transitioned into coaching, earning his UEFA A Licence in 2022. He returned to Montpellier in 2020 as an attacking coach for the youth teams and briefly managed the women’s side in 2021.

The women’s team currently sits fifth in Division 1 Féminine with 27 points from 19 matches, 11 points behind third-placed Bordeaux. The appointment also reunites Utaka with Nigerian international Ifeoma Onumonu, who joined the club earlier this year.

“It’s an honour to take this role. I know the club’s values, and I’m determined to help this team achieve its ambitions,” Utaka said.
