Blow the Whistle Too Loudly, and You’re On Your Own” – Shehu Sani Warns Senators

Senate Whistleblowers Beware: Sani’s Chilling Warning

Former senator and activist Shehu Sani has cautioned lawmakers about the risks of exposing internal Senate dealings. Reflecting on his own experience, he recalled how his transparency almost led to a six-month suspension.

His statement follows the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of harassment and claimed he deliberately blocked her motions after she rejected his advances.

Sani, who represented Kaduna Central in the 8th Senate, recounted how his decision to disclose senators’ salaries and allowances nearly cost him his seat.

“When I publicly disclosed the salaries and allowances of the Senators, it nearly earned me a six-month suspension if not for Divine Intervention, Saraki and Ekwerenmadu’s immediate rescue,” Sani revealed.

Meanwhile, the Senate’s Ethics Committee dismissed Akpoti-Uduaghan’s petition against Akpabio, arguing it violated procedural rules. Instead of addressing the allegations, the Senate opted to punish her for “bringing the Senate into disrepute.”

⚖️ The Punishment: What Akpoti-Uduaghan Faces

The Senate’s verdict was more than a suspension—it was a complete crackdown:

🔴 Suspension from legislative duties for six months
🔴 Withholding of salaries, allowances, and aides’ payments
🔴 Sealing of her Senate office

This decision has triggered widespread backlash, with many questioning whether the Senate is shielding Akpabio rather than enforcing justice.

“Blow the Whistle Too Loudly, and You Stand Alone” – Sani’s Verdict

Shehu Sani’s message is clear: the Senate prioritizes self-preservation, and those who speak out risk being politically abandoned.

“Just know that if you are there and you blow the whistle too loudly, you will be ‘On your Own,’ no senator will bring his head or neck to support you.”

His remarks raise crucial questions:
Is the Nigerian Senate suppressing internal dissent?
Are whistleblowers being punished instead of being protected?
What does this mean for accountability in Nigeria’s legislature?

With Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension already causing nationwide outrage, will this case expose a systemic effort to silence whistleblowers in Nigerian politics?

💬 Have Your Say!

🔹 Was this a justified punishment or political suppression?
🔹 Should the harassment claims be independently investigated?
🔹 Does this case highlight deeper gender bias in Nigerian politics?
