The curtain has fallen on the 1st African School Games in Algiers, Algeria — a vibrant celebration of youth, talent, and continental unity.

Team Nigeria delivered a strong performance, finishing with 25 medals — 6 gold, 10 silver, and 9 bronze — across 10 sports. The team ranked 4th overall, behind hosts Algeria, Egypt, and Tunisia.

In a symbolic closing ceremony, the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and hosts Algeria formally handed over the official flag to Nigeria, confirming the country as the host of the 2nd African School Games in 2027. The moment marked Nigeria’s growing leadership in African youth sports and development.

Olopade Praises Athletes, Sets 2027 Vision

Director General of the Nigeria Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, commended the young athletes for their medal haul, discipline, and spirited representation of the nation.

“These Games have shown us that the future of Nigerian sports is not only bright but unstoppable. Our young athletes have demonstrated courage, skill, and heart. This exposure will prepare them for even greater stages,” he said.

Olopade emphasised that the Games were about more than competition — they were a platform for unity, hard work, and national pride.

 Beyond the Podium

While the medal count was impressive, the event’s biggest success lay in the exposure and life-changing experience for Nigeria’s student-athletes, many of whom wore the national colours internationally for the first time.

The Games also reinforced the Olympic values of excellence, respect, and friendship, nurturing patriotism and ambition among the youth.

🇳🇬 Looking Ahead to 2027

Hon. Olopade thanked the Algerian government and ANOCA for hosting a successful inaugural edition and promised Nigeria would raise the bar in 2027, delivering a world-class hosting experience.

Upon their return, Team Nigeria will be celebrated at a special reception by the National Sports Commission, followed by other national ceremonies to honour their achievements.
